An Ode to my Prince Charles by Nancy Davidson

They say that dogs are “man’s best friend”,
But that doesn’t begin to describe it in the end.
They are a gift from heaven above,
Ready to give unconditional love.

Charles, with your golden coat and soft brown eyes,
You were a blessing to me in disguise.
You were there waiting for me everyday,
Excited to see me, and wanting to play.

Running after your favorite ball,
Coming faithfully when I would call.

You gave so much, asking for nothing in return,
Listening to me closely, but I had so much to learn.

You were my protector, my teacher, my friend,
You came at a time when my heart needed to mend.
You showed me that I could love once more,
You were my yellow dog I did adore.

Sometimes in life we don’t have a choice,
I spoke for you because you didn’t have a voice.
The decision I made was so hard to do,
But please remember I was only thinking of you.

People said “it is the circle of life”, it’s the way it should be,
I knew this was true, but still difficult for me.
It hurt so much to see you this way,
I had to do something other than pray.

There’s a great big hole inside my heart,
It’s there because we had to part.
How can I thank you for the gift of “you”,
All I can do is keep your memory true.

I hope you are in a better place,
Where there is no more pain for you to face.
This is the wish I wish for you,
I hope Dancer is with you for I miss him too.

2009 was not a kind year,
I have lost two friends that I loved so dear.
My beloved Dancer, and now my Charles,
God please watch over them and keep them near.

Rest in peace my Bonnie Prince Charles.
